Guido Heuer, from the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, has been exhibiting his work since 1971. His themes and materials have always combined the ancient and the modern, the natural and the post-industrial: "Engraved metal remains central to my work, but in increasingly subtle ways, and decorative laminates give me the colours and the sensation of permanence that is also found in metals. I try to eliminate the use of solder and the majority of the pieces are fixed to the flat surface by means of visible screws. Interconnecting solid shapes by using steel cables has been a way of introducing into these smaller works something of what I have done on a larger scale in bigger spaces. The constant threads in my work are here being broadened out or interpreted in a more fragmentary way in this new series of mine". | |
